Our house is a very, very, very fine house

This is a long one, folks! Do you want to see inside the house we are buying? Good, because I am dying to show you some good stuff. Of course, the paint colors are not my choosing, the wallpaper will be coming down, and the carpet will be pulled up and thrown out. That’s all cosmetics and does not bother me one bit.

I snatched these photos from a real estate web page. I will have my own soon. We have a lot of work to do, but none of it seems incredibly daunting. Time consuming for sure, but not undoable. I think the hardest thing to do will be new floors. Everywhere there is carpet we will put down some type of Pergo, hardwood, or cork flooring. I’m thinking dark dark dark. I love dark floors, white trim and light colored walls. I absolutely can not stand yellow wood. If it hints of yellow no thank you. Browns with reds for me, thank you.

If you make it to the end, there is a surprise. No peeking!

No longer silent

Lately my thoughts, my actions, my decisions, my very existence has been consumed with one very large life changing decision. And everything kept going back to that one thing. I have not blogged because I could not say. I would write about something that happened and I would find it came back to what has been going on. And I could not say. So I remained silent even about the little things.

I wanted to write. I wanted to share. I wanted to beg for prayers and friends to talk with and blog through the decisions and the journey. But I could not say. Too much was a stake. So many others to think about. And I could not say. My heart has ached. My heart has rejoiced. My heart has hid in fear. But I could not say. A few of you knew and even you did not know all. I thank my God for you. I thank you for not saying. I thank you for keeping the hearts of others. You are a gift in my life. I love each of you and thank God for putting you in my life. Your prayers and support have been felt and appreciated. This would not have happened without God’s hand in this.

I had one day in which I could not contain my joy for some good news we received. News that would change our lives in a positive way. News of something I thought would never happen for us again. I made a broad, cryptic update on facebook. It was torment for some of you, but I needed to rejoice from the rooftops and this was the closest I could come.

Adventures of PNeumonia Boy

To be annoying to an almost 14 year old sick boy one must pronounce the ‘p’. PNeumonia Boy is really sick. I think we are one day away from the worst of it, but it is still a scary place to be.

This started on Friday, December 9th when he went to bed early feeling poorly. By Monday I was worried about dehydration because he was not eating or drinking and when he tried he would lose it. He was given some medicine to help him keep liquids in with a recheck the next day to make sure he was able to do so and did not need to be admitted for dehydration.

So much of this has become a blur now. The coughing got worse and worse. He said his chest was hurting. We couldn’t keep him awake for much time at all. I was still having to coax him into eating and drinking. We couldn’t get his fever to break. His breathing was labored. I could go on, but you get the idea. The boy is sick. After a week, a Z-Pack, a few more visits, and ruling out both flu and strep we went back on Tuesday the 20th and an x-ray confirming my suspicions of pneumonia.

Christmas codes

So seeing as half of my 6-Pack no longer officially believes in Santa I have thrown a bit of fun into the mix this year. Unofficially, as soon as they no longer believe in Santa (or choose to ruin the Santa game for younger siblings) they no longer get those special “Santa” gifts. This keeps older mouths quiet in front of younger children’s ears. It’s a magical time of excitement and wonder! If you ruin this for my child I will smack you.

While mine have been appreciative of what has been done for them in the name of Santa (thanking us gratefully when I they figure it out), during some really bad times our family has twice been the recipient of a Christmas in the name of Saint Nicholas. Our family makes Santa a game, but we honor the man and the tradition of the real St. Nicholas and his loving selfless giving done in honor of his love for Christ.

Tinting

Tinting mason jars Saturday afternoon left my hands a bit more colorful than usual. I love using mason jars for storing stuff. I use them for their original purpose of canning. I make jellies and jams and pickles and salsa and other goodies. I use them to store dried good as well, marshmallows don’t get crushed and smushed in them. Bags of dried beans slide all over the cabinets and shelves, so I open them and pour them in a jar. If I’m not going to use them right away I vacuum seal it.

I love to throw pencils and pens in one on my desk or paperclips and rubberbands in them too. They ar perfect for most anything, especially the wide mouth jars.

Pepparkakor

Ginger and spice and everything nice that’s what pepparkakor’s made of.

I love ginger desserts. (Note: I don’t like ginger in my entrees, just my desserts.) I love gingerbread! I love ginger snaps! I love ginger ale! (Ginger beer is good, but I don’t like it too strong.) But what I love most with ginger is pepparkakor! My December and Christmas are not complete without it, more specifically, Nyåkers Pepparkakor. One could even say I luuuurve it! (Brad, that was for you!)

I thought Bairno’s first Christmas I was going to have some serious withdrawals. The poor boy was days/weeks old and his little nursing tummy could not handle all the ginger and clove I was ingesting so I had to stop cold turkey and let everyone else eat my beloved Nyåkers Pepparkakor. It was oh.so.hard. Now he loves it as much as I do. Seriously, I have never seen another person’s eyes light up like they do when he takes a bite. Well, except my own. He is his mother’s boy!

Gaudete!

[rave player=Advent3]

Today is the third Sunday of Advent! Gaudete, gaudete! (Rejoice, rejoice!)

Gaudete, guadete

Refrain: Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiæ
Hoc quod optabamus,
Carmina lætitiæ
Devote reddamus.

Refrain

Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.

Refrain

Ergo nostra contio
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.

Refrain

Refrain: Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born
Of the Virgin Mary — rejoice!

The time of grace has come—
This that we have desired,
Verses of joy
Let us devoutly return.

Refrain

The closed gate of Ezechiel
Is passed through,
Whence the light is born,
Salvation is found.

Refrain

Therefore let our gathering
Now sing in brightness
Let it give praise to the Lord:
Greeting to our King.

Refrain

Pecan Crescent Cookies

There is nothing specifically Christmassy about these most delicious cookies except for the fact that I only bake these in December and January. In this day and age we can buy pecans anytime, but fresh pecans are harvested in late fall. I remember my grandmother and my mother making these every year.

These are quite delicious and oh so delicate! These are not for the faint of heart as the recipe starts with a cup of melted butter.

Lights!

This year I really wanted to return to the olden days of C7 lights. This seemed to be a decision met with making no one happy but myself. We all compromised. I wanted the old lights, you now the old painted ones. That was nixed by RevMrKnowTea who said they get too hot and would be dangerous. Pooey, I say. That room could use the extra heat and our house never burned down while using them when I was a child. The children, ah the children. Half wanted bright white lights the other half wanted multi-colored lights.

Compromise! Well, I got the C7 lights (the yucky plastic faceted ones – see next sentence). RevMrKnowTea got the newer LED cool ones. The children got lights that can be either white or multi-colored. So we bought these sets that are cool touch, faceted, plastic, multi-colored or white C7 light sets. I guess we all win!

I see the moon

I skipped December 6 & 7 of the December Photo Project. (update: I added a photo I took on the 6th.) Our lives were a bit overwhelmed by a friends passing. He fell asleep and went to celebrate in heaven. We were all affected by the loss, but none more than our oldest son. He lost a leader, a mentor, a friend, a scout master. My son was deeply saddened by the loss he felt, but greater still the pain his friend feels in losing a father.

Our local Christmas parade was this evening. Oh, how cold I was walking behind the old firetruck as my Star Scout and his little brother the Wolf cub rode up top with the rest of the Troop. Our 7 year old wolf cub is a bit of a mascot to the older boys in the Boy Scout Troop. They treat him so sweetly.
